There is not a country in this beautiful world that does not struggle with mice infestation. If you want to protect your recreation vehicle from mice infestation, then you should now how mice behave, simply say you need to get to know them a little bit.
Mice are family of rodents and they are a small mammal, with a little snout, small rounded ears, fury little body and a long scaly tale. But they also have a high breeding rate. They will invade your home for food and nesting and this is where the problem of infestation comes in. But they have enemies too such as cats, wild dogs, birds such as owls or eagles and snakes. They are not clean and they spread diseases through their parasites and droppings such as Salmonella, Murine Typhus, Leptospirosis and Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). Apart from all of this, they will eat anything such as wires and cables, they will get into your home and into your vehicles and they will destroy your belongings.
So, how do you know if they are in your RV or recreational vehicles? They will enter through small holes so do a proper inspection. Look for small holes in the cupboards, behind drawers and in the cabinets. A good place to look is the area where the propane tanks are. There will be a musty sent in the RV and lookout for mice droppings which looks like small black rice.
But enough said, and knowing that they are actually a pest how are we going to get rid of them? Here are some options:
Patching up
The first thing we need to do is to close the holes. Depending on the size you can use a metal plate or a piece of wood or any other solid surface. Make sure that the “patch” is non-chewable. Steel wool are excellent to plug up small holes and silicone. I would patch it and seal it with silicone to make sure that it is done properly. They do say “prevention is better than cure”.
Pest Control
You could call your local pest control expert. But this can be expensive depending on the infestation. But there are other option you can do to get rid of mice.
Mouse traps
Wooden mouse traps are an option to use. Place them on strategic places such as in the cupboard or cabinets, but make sure that they are in a place where they can’t hurt you or your family.
It is advisable to use a closed trap if you have animals or children. To attract them, use a good spoon of peanut butter. Place traps also outside your RV, remember they are not only inside, but comes from outside.
Mouse poison/ Pellets
You can find mouse pellets from your local super market. But here is an important tip. Put the pellets out of reach of children, small dogs or cats or other animals by placing it in a cage. Some manufacturers’ advice you to put some water close to the bait. I would definitely not advise this. When the mice eat the bait, it makes them thirsty and they need water. It is advisable to leave the water outside the RV and they will go and look for the water outside and die somewhere outside. Make sure that when you purchase these pellets that they will not hurt any other animals such as birds or cats.
Conclusion
Mice will always find a way to get in your RV. If you think the problem is solved, remember they can return. So always have some traps ready and place and check them regularly. Make sure you found all holes and plug and patch them. Once you have this problem under control, it will get easier.
